Shatranj: your move...

ok... long time i haven't had a chance to write on here... Shatranj now has its own website... http://www.shatranj-thefilm.com .... so i have been sort of busy with that... also... a quick update on the festival front... After doing its world premiere at Palm Springs International Short Film Festival, "Shatranj" will now be playing at MetroCAF-SIGGRAPH Student Film Festival and Downtown International Short Festival in New York on the 1st of October. Too bad I wont be able to attend the show... But I hope whoever gets a chance to go see it roots for it... :P

well... enough said... i need votes... :)

Here are a couple of test renders from the 3rd Scene (the street scene where the soldier eventually encounters the suicide bombers). These are the various blocks that he runs through... Next step, plug in the character and final cameras start finalizing each shot for the final render.

After having sealed off the animation, The lighting process is almost done. Heres the test render from the first Scene. A few of the models in this render are missing (the tank, road blocks etc.) but yup... this is what has been locked down on the lighting front.

Uncle Sam: Model

Uncle 'The Butcher' Sam, has made a mark for himself in the history of this world. With an agenda of War against Terror (basically anything that breathes without his consent) Uncle Sam will not stop at anything to bring the villains to justice. He is a war veteran. Was in the French trenches when the Germans decided to use poison gas on them. Was in Vietnam, protecting God knows what. Was even there when a bunch of bearded idiots decided to go against him with all the ammunition that he had provided them. Recently he's out somewhere in the desert reigning the oil fields. This shot was taken when he lunged with all his fury at the little kid who threw a slipper at him (and missed).

The Ally: Model

The bishop on Uncle Sam's side of the board. The main victim in the Holocaust, and now back with a vengeance. There is no stopping this guy. Extremely clandestine, and very clever, this guy uses his wits to command the pawns on the board to do his bidding. He will have his revenge from anyone and everyone in his path. If you aren't on his side, he WILL have his revenge.

Suicide Bomber B: Model

This guy is truly a work of art... he's passionate... in it... with it... and all that jazz... only problem is he doesn't quite know WHAT he's passionate about. Neither does he know why hes yelling at this time. All he knows is, that somewhere... somehow... someone promised him 72 virgins after he presses the red button on his fire-starter... he does not know where... how or who though... still working that one out.

The Suicide Bomber's rig is also ready... with a final few tweaks, its good to go into animation... This is the guy... putting together his dynamite sticks so that he can blow himself to oblivion. Yes, those are hair on his face... and yes... he does like to call that a beard.

By no means complete... a lot of the boards need to be painted... a lot of rubble, and more life has to modeled and textured in... but, this is a pretty close rendition of what the final piece is hopefully going to look like in terms of visual style and lighting. A cross between Swat and Palestine... definitely a lot more detail yet to be placed in.

US Soldier: Model

Finally... the US soldier is completely rigged and modeled out. So here he is striking a pose for the camera... Next up... character profile for Private Bloom Callahan. Of course, have to update this with a textured version of the Pvt... and have to add the brows. hmmm... i wonder where they ran off too.

Ok... after a very dry spell on here... i FINALLY have some updates. The storyboard and animatic have finally been locked down... this is what things finally look like now:

Heres the first version of the storyboard. Even though the timing of the frames is better understood with the animatic... here are some of the sketched out screens... more as a road map of the suicide i am going to commit.
